A Short Guide to Tasting - Tuesday, 1 March 2005



Wine is meant to be enjoyed, what follows is not a prescriptive list but a collection of tips that will help you get more enjoyment out of wine. What makes a wine good?

Wine is a very subjective subject, people have very individual palates, not everybody loves huge rich reds or sticky dessert wines. as you travel through the world of wine you will numerous different styles, some of them can be quite confusing at first. The best way to learn about wine is to taste as widely as possible, I’m sure you’ll find most of the surprises pleasant.

Rather than buying the wine with the most gold medals on it here are some basic characters to help you judge a wines characteristics. The first and most important question is to ask yourself is, do I like the wine? What do I like about it? It is easy to get carried away in all the nuances and technicalities of wine and forget about just enjoying it. Try and think about the wine as a whole rather that each of the elements.

Here are some common wine terms that will help you in working out why you like or dislike a particular wine.

Bouquet: Literally how the wine smells, is it attractive?

Flavours: Do you like the different range of flavours each wine displays?

Intensity: Intensity refers to the richness or strength of the flavours in the wine.

Length: Refers to the length of time a wine lasts on your palate, a wine of great length is one that the flavours linger long after the wine has been swallowed.

Complexity: This refers to the number of different flavours, textures and other characteristics in the wine. A simple wine few elements whilst a complex wine displays a great number of different elements.

Balance: Balance refers to the wine as a whole, a wine that is balanced is a wine where all the different elements sit together in a seamless way. An unbalanced wine might have too much acid, not enough fruit, too much tannin etc.
